COM ’02, B.S. in Broadcast Journalism

During my time with BUTV10, I …. worked on Inside Boston from 1998 to the time I graduated in 2002, producing and reporting at first, then later helping to manage the show’s large team of journalists as Executive Producer.  The experience I gained during that time provided the groundwork for my entire broadcast career, particularly when it comes to time management, which is a monsterous challenge for all new reporters in their first jobs.

Since BUTV10, I’ve reported and anchored in both sports and news, first in Northeast Georgia covering the Georgia Bulldogs, then Spring Training in Fort Myers, Fla., before ultimately taking the job I’ve had for the last nine years, investigative reporter at WTSP-TV (CBS) in Tampa Bay.  Our team has been honored with the national Polk, duPont, and Murrow awards for exposing government abuse and neglect.

My advice to current BUTV10 students is…gain as much experience as humanly possible. There is no way to gain enough experience in the classroom to prepare you for the first job, so your ability to land that gig – and succeed in it – will depend on how much experience you gain outside of the classroom at BU.

My number one lesson I’ve learned since joining the industry is…network, network, network.  The connections you make on the job will help make you a better reporter, and the connections within the industry will help you land better reporting jobs.
